In our area you can call every hawk you see a Red-tail and you will be right nearly all of the time. Their comfort zone is anywhere outside of shotgun range and if you are in a passing car they will ignore you until you slow under 30 mph. Occasionally you will find one perched and occupied with something else long enough to get a photograph. Otherwise you can wish you had a longer lens. I take a picture of every hawk I see, hoping it is something besides a Red-tail. They have a number of different color morphs which leads me to some hope but after analysis it is usually “Red-tail”.
